During the 1950′s up to the 1970′s, muscle cars and hot rods dominated the world. Even females could not help turning their heads when slick vintage vehicle’s drove by. Times have now changed but, the urges of wanting to see vintage cars, classic cars, hot rods, and muscle cars have not. People who have preserved these classic cars are very much appreciated within society. When these cars are out on the road people really enjoy seeing them. Hot Rods and Muscle Cars are ultimate private statements of the car’s owner and legacy, which are proudly shown to everyone. You probably have seen them at the car shows, television, or even seen one passing by on the highway. How many times have you turned your head or even tried to speed up to get a closer look at one of these classic cars? The Hot Rods and Muscle Cars say much about what it is that makes America the proud nation that we are. Hot rods and Muscle Cars have been notorious being an attention-getting device for whatever group of people or enthusiasts they were encountering. Hot rods and muscle cars are a nostalgic part of our culture. Hot Rods and Muscle Cars come in many different imaginable shapes, conditions and modifications. The amount of customization that is done to the hot rod is an extension of builder’s imagination or frustration of his sight on a conventional styling that represents a part or unique style of the builder. This is not a bad thing at all. An individual can draw from it as someone’s unique perspective as to a new dimension on the life style in the US or any other country for that matter. The mere existence of the hot rods and muscle cars cannot dismiss the sense of pride in the country. To catch glimpse of the ever-popular hot rods and muscle cars, one just needs to go over to your local auto repair shop and ask them for information on any of the upcoming car shows in the area. Auto mechanics are forever mindful of the elusive hot rods and muscle cars from many years gone by. Most anyone in the automotive industry can be considered huge fans of the hot rod and muscle car. However fear not, there are those die-hard mechanics still out there that like nothing more than getting there hands on classic hot rod and muscle cars to rekindle the need to hear rumble of powerful engines, or else peak at the slick bodied vehicles from days that are gone by.

The Muscle Car industry was spawned out of the gradual increase in popularity of stock car racing (NASCAR) and drag racing.

The first car to be inspired by the need to create ever more powerful machines was actually in 1948 with the Oldsmobile Rocket 88. This car featured the first high compression overhead valve engine combined with a much lighter body and chassis design. By 1955 every car manufacturer was offering their own version of the V8 with some remaining legendary to this day.

Two of the engines that haven’t changed much since there original conception is the Chrysler Hemi, first manufactured in 1951 and the other is the small block Chevy which started manufacture in 1955.

Over the forth-coming years the car manufacturers entered into a battle not only over the engine performance but on the size of the cars. In the fifties the cars were huge with the size becoming a status symbol. This increase in size lead to ever more powerful engines being employed to ensure that the acceleration did not diminish. As with today’s market there are still individuals that want to go faster which lead to a thriving after-market performance parts industry.

In 1962 Dodge and Plymouth began to drop their heavier cars whilst Ford and Chevy started to offer an intermediate car such as the Fairline. The decrease in weight coupled with the lively engines led to Dodge and Pontiac performing very well on the NASCAR racing circuit.

When these cars were given over to the tuning enthusiasts the performance increase was phenomenal with Hot Rod recording a quarter mile of just 12.69 seconds and a stock setting 8 NASCAR records. These figures were fantastic marketing material and often quoted be sales people everywhere.

Pontiac’s timing of the introduction of the GTO was perfect. They completely misjudged how popular the car would be estimating sales at approximately 5,000 in the first year but actually selling 32,000. The main feature that distinguished this car from other Pontiac’s was that Engineers added the higher performance engine as an option. This allowed the designers to overcome the self imposed limitation of mid-sized cars not having engines bigger that 330 cubic inches.

It wouldn’t be long before other car manufacturers were hot on Pontiac’s heels with the introduction of the Chevelle by Chevrolet and Skylark from Buick.

As competition mounted it was all out war between the competing companies. Each company understood the importance of motor sports in the marketing of these vehicles. Ford in particular sparing to expense in producing some serious competition in rallies, international endurance racing and NASCAR races all over the country. One weapon in Ford arsenal was the introduction of the Ford Thunderbolt which was built for speed having a lightweight body and massive engine it wasn’t for the faint-hearted.

In 1964 Ford also introduced the Ford Mustang which came with a long line of options but not originally marketed as a Muscle car. The car was extremely popular and sold over 681, 000 in the first year of sales.

The battle of the car manufacturers continued into the 1970′s with the more an more powerful cars being introduced.

As the popularity of Muscle Cars increased there became greater concern over the safety of these cars on the public highway. The concern was particularly targeted at the young buyers and the effectiveness of handling, brakes and tire adhesion. This lead to the insurance companies raising the surcharges associated with these cars putting many cars out of reach to the target market. In 1973 there were also efforts to increase the cleanliness of the air which lead to lower octane fuels being introduced.

Make Money With Your Classic Car, Old Truck or Hot Rod

Classic Trucks in the movies and starring in TV Commercials!

Owners of old trucks would never deny permission for somebody to take a picture of their vehicle. Do you want to take a picture of my truck? Go ahead. Next time don’t even ask!

Let’s suppose somebody came up to you and asked for permission to take a picture of your classic truck to publish in a magazine or a website. Would you refuse? Of course not. You’re proud of your truck and you want the whole world to see it.

But there are people who don’t want to have their classic trucks photographed or filmed. They spend a lot of time fixing their trucks, they go to car shows to show off what they have and yet they refuse to have their trucks filmed or photographed. It doesn’t make sense and it’s not very smart either. Maybe they don’t need the money…

Now let’s suppose you had a chance of having your truck filmed for a TV commercial or, better yet, for a movie! How great would that be? Let’s also suppose that some TV producer decided to create a new series based on the 1940′s, 1950′s or 1960′s. Wouldn’t he(she) need a lot of cars from those eras? And if the series became a hit the vehicles would be used again and again.

Yeah. It it possible and it’s not even too hard. You just have to promote your vehicle in the right places. There are companies out there looking for vehicles exactly like yours. Many companies in fact. They look for classic trucks for sale and they buy them. They look for classic cars of all types and they pay rent to the car owners in order to film the cars. There are companies that go after owners of classic cars, old trucks and hot rods in order to list these vehicles in large databases. Advertising agencies put ads in the papers when they need an old car or pickup truck for a TV commercial. Keep your eyes open because your big chance may come from that direction.

If you have a good set of pictures of your little jewel you’re one step closer to fame and fortune. Well, may be not fortune but fame is possible…

A movie production company may need classic trucks just like yours. They might need your truck to spend, say, three days in Hollywood and a week on location in New York. They would make the arrangements to have the vehicle transported to both places and might even be willing to pay for your expenses to go along. You would see how a movie is made and you could even end up meeting a couple of famous movie stars just because you own an antique truck.

The producer of a movie or a TV commercial may be looking for a beautifully restored old car, one that looks like it came out of the showroom a couple of days ago. But directors want their films to look real. Therefore they may need a regular classic vehicle, one that shows it’s been used. And they might even need a real wreck, a rust bucket so to speak. Your chances are real, no matter what condition your truck is in. Don’t be ashamed of it. Go ahead and try.

And how does this thing work? First you have to find an agent, a company that has the contacts and knows where to go with your truck pictures. Get listed on their databases and be patient. You might get a call the following morning but it could also take a couple of years.

Here are a few suggestions of sites you can visit to learn more about this:

MovieVehicles.com

OldCarLocator.com

Cornwell & Sheridan Motor Cars

TVParty.com

Classic-Chassis.com

If you’re really committed to the idea of having your vehicle on a movie or a TV commercial you may do what actors do. Have a professional photographer take a series of shots of the vehicle and send them to advertising agencies or talent agencies. Or have a nice video produced, send it to talent agencies and upload it to YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo Video and so on. Even wedding planners may be interested in your old truck or classic car. Promote it well and one day you’ll get your big break.

And here’s another very important thing to keep in mind: don’t hide your prized possession in your garage. Take it to shows, go to swap meets and take your chances at show prizes. You may win a simple trophy and you may also get some prize money. But you’ll have to make sure your truck is in show condition before you do that. Nobody will allow you enter your classic car or old truck in a car show if the car or truck is not worth showing. Movies and TV commercials might look for regular old trucks or classic cars, but car shows don’t. Car shows want the cream of the crop, so to speak.

All of this is true all over the world. Movies are made everywhere these days and so are TV commercials. Classic car and old truck shows are common in almost every country and you can take advantage of that to make money with your truck or classic car.

Money? With old trucks and classic cars? Yep. It’s possible mainly because nobody is making trucks like yours anymore.

While there should not be any confusion between a true rat rod and a hot rod there seems to be many who are getting them mixed up. Within the hot rod crowd even mentioning the word RAT in their circle is a big no no for many reasons but mostly because the hot rodder group tend to have a higher end taste than most rat rodders do in general.

A ratrod in general has many qualities that are exactly opposite of what a true hotrod should have and many works in progress tend to be generalized as a rat car or rat truck for one reason or another. You can tell for the most part the subtle differences between a work in progress muscle car styled hot rod versus rat rods and it lies mainly in the details of the work.

No matter which scene you might be in or thinking of joining there will always be those who dislike another style of rod just like those who have an issue with ford or chevy. In the scene many people will brand their identity to the make, model or style of their ride and those who trash talk others are mainly doing it out of fear, embarrassment or their own insecurities and nothing more.

Throwing around the rat rod word in a hot rodders backyard can end up in an arguement even though we all can agree with how childish that may seem but to those who take their cars, their scene and their rods seriously, it is a big deal and you should at least be aware of what words come out of your mouth and when.

You can search for both rod types whether rat or hot through any search engine and don’t forget to do an image search as well. See how many you know as a true rat or if it is a project vehicle on its way into the hot rod hall of fame. Don’t let price fool you because you can drop a decent amount in either scene depending on what frame and model you start with as well as what stage of completion the ride is in.

A Rat Rod is difficult to define but you know when you see one! They are often based on cars from the 1940′s to the 1960′s but some examples are as recent as the 1970′s. Some Hot-Rods are assembed from a selection of parts usually dating around the 1930′s.

To the people not familiar with Rat Rods these cars may appear unfinished and shoddy but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Rat Rods were originally developed as an alternative to the glossy high-price Hot-Rods which were never driven and trailored to shows. Rat Rods are all about the fun of building and driving them and appearance take second place. The majority of Rat Rods that are seen at the shows will be dented and rusty but importantly they will have been driven there. If a part needs to be replaced then the owner will often fabricate the part themselves of fit a part that does the job equally well. If the Rat Rod is painted at all it is usually matt black or primered and often will have Maltese crosses on the doors and skull accessories such as the gear-shifter.

For the builders of these cars it is all about building a car that performs well both in speed and acceleration as well as handling and braking. For that reason the majority of the ‘comfort items will be stripped away such as headlining, interior trim to give the best power to weight ratio possible. Many of the cars have heavily modified bodies and are often roof-chopped, channelled, lengthened, shortened etc.

The typical choice of engine for a Rat Rod is a V8 which would probably be a Ford Flathead V8 or an early Chrysler Hemi.

If there’s one thing we can rely on every summer, it’s the release of some fun movies. A great example is the zany offering “Hot Rod”. This film builds on the premise that Rod Kimble’s step-father (Frank) is a bully and Rod needs to take him down a notch or two. The problem we soon see is that Daddy Dearest has major health problems. Rod plans to raise money to save Frank by performing a never-before-completed stunt jump.

In the meantime we learn that Frank has a biological son named Kevin Powell, who turns out to be a supportive step-brother for Rod. To learn more about how Rod trains for his mission and to donate money for Frank, be sure to visit Kevin’s site.

This Paramount Pictures, Michaels/Goldwyn Production “Hot Rod” will come to theaters on August 3, 2007. Many familiar names compose the cast as well as some on their way to sure stardom. They include Andy Samberg of Saturday Night Live (SNL) fame; Isla Fisher noted for her role as the sex-crazed sister in the equally zany “Wedding Crashers”; Ian Mc Shane television and film star (Deadwood (for which he won a Golden Globe, Lovejoy, and “Sexy Beast” among a multitude of others; and Sissy Spacek, another award winner who’s career spans over 35 years. You may remember her from “Carrie” or “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. Pam Brady (“South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut) wrote the hilarious script, and Akiva Shaffer directed. He currently writes for SNL as well directs their Digital Shorts and music videos. This film is not yet rated.

You’ll find short videos, photos, and more information on “Hot Rod” as well as “Stuntman Forever” on My Space as well as their individual websites.

Movie Plot

Rod Kimble fancies himself a talented stuntman and spends hours perfecting his art. In the meantime Frank, his step-dad can’t seem to harass him enough. During their sparring sessions Frank throws Rod around, humiliating him at every turn. When Frank becomes so ill he needs major surgery, it’s a mixed blessing for Rod. He gets the chance to showcase his biggest stunt ever and if he pulls it off he’ll not only become famous, he’ll also be able to pound the daylights out of Frank. If he fails he faces the ultimate debasement because if Frank lives he’ll have the last laugh and Rod’s audience will quickly disappear.

Rod idolizes the now aging and retired Evel Knievel, who ultimately jumped over 13 double-decker and 14 Greyhound buses while perched on his motorcycle. Rod sets a goal of soaring over a total of 15 buses. With the money raised from ticket sales he’ll become famous and be able to pay for Frank’s operation.

Andy Samberg

Whether or not you’ve seen Andy on SNL, you’ll fall in love with this loveable goofball. His and Chris Parnell’s hysterically funny short video “Lazy Sunday: Chronicles of Narnia”, released in December 2005, broke viewing records for My Space and NBC. He and all the talent in and behind the scenes of “Hot Rod” and “Stuntman Forever” provide some rollicking good fun that you’ll want to see over and over.
